A Brief History of our Sangam
While Tamil community in South Florida has been functioning as Tamil Sangam in
an informal manner fostered and nurtured by long time veterans it is only recently it has been incorporated as a formal
non-profit organization.
In the beginning of 2000, the General Body decided to transform as a registered
non-profit organization and formed a committee which prepared the necessary artciles of incorporation and by-laws. On
the basis of these documents, South Florida Tamil Sangam Inc was established as a registered non-profit organization in the
month of April 2000 and the first Board of Directors was elected in the same month.
This first Board consisted of Mr. Ponnuswamy, President; Mrs Lakshmi Subrahmanian,
Vice President; Mrs. Prema Rathinavelu, Secretary; Mr. Madhu Chandrasekar Asst Secretary; Mrs Jayashree Sivaraman, treasurer and
Board of Directors from the three counties Mrs Bhagi Sahasranaman and Mr Gopinath Sathyamurthy from Broward; Mrs Usha Narayanan
and Mrs Latha Srinivasan from Miami-Dade; Mrs Nirmala Jeyapaul and Dr. Sundaram from Palm Beach County.
The interest and participation of the members along with the coordination by the Board
of Directors, the organization made good progress in fulfilling its objectives in the first few years.
In accordance with the by-laws, a new Board of Directors was elected for the year
2002.
Perceiving that South Florida Tamil Sangam Inc., is an organization dedicated to serve
the Tamil Community in its mission, more and more Tamilians are becoming members. The performance of this organization
and the enthusiasm shown by its members during the first quarter of 2002 indicates that this fountain head of Tamil
Culture in South Florida, with the help of dedicated and inspired persons at the helm, South Florida Tamil Sangam will grow
in its noble activities and become the foremost among the organizations of its kind in this country!
